Dolls -Gotta Hate ‘Em

What’s A Haunted Doll?

Do you hate dolls? I owned a few growing up and never really enjoyed having them around. Someone bought me a big one and it stood about 3 feet high with black hair, blue eyes, and a matching blue dress. It was placed in the corner by my bedroom door and I remember her eyes shining at night. There was just enough light coming into the room from the hallway. I was afraid of that doll and eventually threw her in our attic. There are many stories related to dolls and paranormal activity and some of the stories are terrifying. If you are a paranormal enthusiast, then you have heard about the doll named Annabelle, right?

A doll such as Annabelle is possessed or cursed by evil. Paranormal activity can also involve a stuffed animal that is homemade or manufactured. The history of haunted dolls goes back to Egypt. Wax images of Ramses II were created to cause his death. Other objects used to curse people include voodoo, poppet and effigy dolls, all associated with the occult.

This is an example of a voodoo doll used to curse people.

Why Fear Dolls?

I remember seeing an episode of The Twilight Zone about a “Talky Tina” doll that terrorized a family. The husband kept throwing her away and she kept returning. Here is a brief clip from that episode.

The fear of dolls is a phobia that affects many people from all walks of life.

  • It’s a common fear and called Pediophobia.
  • Pediophobia includes the fear of stuffed animals, ventriloquist dummies, animated dolls, lifelike dolls, baby dolls and robotic toys.
  • The fear may manifest in early childhood or develop suddenly triggered by an event.
  • Many people with a fear of dolls never seek professional help.

People Are Strange

Last year in Southern California, someone started leaving porcelain dolls on the doorsteps of homes where in each case, a 10 year-old girl lived. The dolls resembled the girls and a total of eleven dolls were left a various homes in the community. Not knowing if this was a prank or a case of children being stalked, the families contacted police and an investigation was launched.

Eventually the mystery was solved when a woman admitted that she was leaving the dolls as a kind gesture. The dolls were part of her collection and she was giving them away because her daughters were too old for them. The embarrassed woman admitted that she intentionally matched the dolls with the girls in the families. All people involved belonged to the same church. If she didn’t intend on creeping people out, why didn’t she knock on the doors and actually communicate with the families? Sorry, but I still think what she did was weird. How’d you like to find this on your doorstep?

Some years ago my daughter received a doll from her great-grandmother. She had bought it in Mexico, and man, was it evil looking! She had a creepy scowl and everything. Before the day was over I tossed it in the dumpster!
